The cost to make the PS3 was staggering when it first came out, hence the outrage (for the time) debut price point of $599. The technology was completely proprietary, staying away from using current technologies that were readily available. With that its no surprise that Sony took a very large hit when it comes to how much they lost on the console alone. CEO Andrew House says Sony “will not generate anything like the losses we did for the PlayStation 3” when it comes to the upcoming PS4.
When I say Sony lost a lot of money i’m not being dramatic. The estimated losses were $3.5 billion in 2007 and 2008. The console didn’t start making a profit until late 2011, and that was even after Sony cut the manufacturing costs with the introduction of the new slim model.
